#alaac25 in Philadelphia (quilts included) from With Strings Attached

I've been to five ALA Midwinter Meetings (January/February) in Philadelphia, most recently in January, 2020. This was the first Annual there since 1982.

My first ALA Annual Conference was in 1984. Since the I've missed two (1991 and 2016). 2020 was cancelled and 2021 was virtual. By my reckoning that means this year was #37. I go to the conference to learn about issues and new books, hear interesting speakers, sightsee, and see friends. My main involvement nowadays is the Retired Members Round Table.

Issues: ongoing threats to access information (from kids to researchers),

#alaac24 in San Diego, part 1 from With Strings Attached

The American Library Association held its 148th Annual Conference in San Diego. 13,523 people attended. That is fewer than the two post-pandemic years (Chicago 2023: 15,842; DC 2022: 13,900) and many fewer than pre-pandemic (Chicago 2017: 22,701). ALA is streamlining operations. Librarians and library workers are accessing continuing education differently (online) and it's often difficult to get travel funding. Still, the in-person gathering has such energy and enthusiasm!

#alaac2023 in Chicago, part 3: the quilts from With Strings Attached

The ALA Biblioquilters began when Connie and I met on a street corner at the 1998 ALA Conference in Washington, D.C. We'd met virtually on the PubLib discussion group but we hadn't met in person. The very first ALABQ meetup was at the 1999 annual conference in New Orleans. In 2000 we began making group quilts for the Exhibits Round Table Silent Auction. Correction: we made one group quilt. I coordinated it -- "a block representing your state" in red/yellow/blue/cream. That quilt sold for $240.

I took advantage of free time + being downtown.

Thursday afternoon: Van Gogh and the Avant-Garde: the Modern Landscape is this summer's big show at the Art Institute. I'd heard of Van Gogh and Seurat, of course, but I was not familiar with their contemporaries Signac, Bernard, and Angrand.

The American Library Association held its 147th Annual Conference at McCormick Place in Chicago from June 22-27. I was among the 15,842 attendees. That's more than last year (Washington, DC: 13,900) but not back to pre-pandemic (Chicago, 2017: 22,702).

I attended the Freedom to Read Foundation board meeting on Thursday as liaison for the Retired Members Round Table. FTRF and the Office of Intellectual Freedom have been busy dealing confronting threats to intellectual freedom -- book bans in school and public libraries, and curriculum, inquiry, and tenure in colleges and universities.

Together again! #alaac22 friends, books, food, books . . . and quilts from With Strings Attached

After two years of virtual meetings the ALA Annual Conference returned in-person. The 13,900 registrants included 8.023 librarians (and trustees, friends, family) and 5,133 vendors (books, equipment, technology, supplies, and more). (By contrast, 2019 in DC: 21,460 and 2019 in New Orleans: 17,599.)

My trip to Washington was the first time I'd flown since February, 2020. Though O'Hare was bustling (9:30 a.m. flight) the lines moved quickly. I snapped photos of the Lake Michigan and Lake Erie shorelines.

My One Monthly Goal for June was to decide on the block and design for the wedding quilt. I have many ideas but I don't have a decision. I'm close. I think.

Weekly update: birthday week, ALA, fabric discoveries, a finish, and reading from With Strings Attached

Extraordinary times

If these were ordinary times I wouldn't be composing a blog post this weekend. I'd be caught up in the activities of the American Library Association Annual Conference. Well, I still was, but the event was virtual and I attended from the comfort of home. I had committee meetings on Thursday, Saturday, and today (Sunday).

Saturday morning I moderated the Retired Members Round Table program featuring Pamela Bannos, a art history/photography professor at Northwestern, whose has done extensive research on Vivian Maier. The book is subitled, "A photographer's life and after life."
